SILVATECH is an infrastructure dedicated to the analysis of samples derived from different parts of the ecosystem (trees and wood, water, soil). It offers a broad range of technologies and methods, the original combination of which enables the structures, properties and biological functions of the living tree within its ecosystem to be deciphered through to the use of wood as a material, ranging from the molecular scale up to a forest stand scale. SILVATECH offers expertise and a methodological development capability for scientific programmes relating to functional ecology, ecophysiology, biogeochemistry and wood sciences.

With the ongoing support of the CPER FORBOIS (2007-2013, 2015-2020), SILVATECH has access to numerous facilities enabling the measurement of key parameters for research studies. The main research studies relate to the dynamics of forests and wood in a changing environmental context (climate change, changes in biotic and abiotic factors, forest management). Thus, the general scientific purpose of SILVATECH is to advance our knowledge in terms of (i) the study of the determinisms of the wood qualities ranging from biology through engineering to the relationships between structure and properties, (ii) the metabolic and anatomical response of the trees exposed to environmental factors and constraints, (iii) material flow dynamics within ecosystems in a climate change context and (iv) the interactions between species (trees, microorganisms) in the forest ecosystem.

These competencies and tools, related to clearly identified research topics and objects allow SILVATECH services and developments to be opened up to a vast regional, national and international community. In conjunction with the Université de Lorraine and AgroParisTech, SILVATECH is also involved every year in the SIFER International Course, the AETPF-Nancy Master and imaging networks, as well as the regular training of students and users.

SILVATECH organises its analysis and development services in 3 connected technological clusters, which rely on well-equipped, open units or preparation workshops :
