11 January 2023 - Literature review on dilute acid pre-treatment of biomass

Pretreatment of biomass is necessary to increase its reactivity. Among the existing pretreatments, dilute acid pretreatment is widely used because of its efficiency. But studies on this pretreatment use very small ranges of conditions and non-standardised methods making common interpretations difficult: it was important to take stock of the published work.

By aggregating data from 63 research papers on dilute acid pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass, we were able to critically analyse its main parameters of time, temperature and acid level. The majority of the literature uses residence times of less than 30 min, temperature ranges of 100 °C to 200 °C and acid levels between 0% and 2%. Statistical analyses allowed us to quantify the time-temperature equivalence for three types of biomass: Forestry, Agricultural and Industrial by non-linear expressions.

We were also able to isolate areas of study to be avoided or favoured in further work, and put in place methodological recommendations to promote the development of an open, findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable data approach for pretreatment research. As a priority, pretreatment equipment (time-temperature kinetics, reactor type) and analytical methods need to be standardised and better described.

This work is part of Julien du Pasquier's doctoral thesis, carried out between the UMR FARE and the CentraleSupélec Biotechnology Chair, with funding from the Grand Reims area and CentraleSupélec.
